The sea level measurements at this station are the oldest in the Adriatic and among the three oldest in the Mediterranean. Begun in 1859 by the Imperial Royal Academy of Commerce and Nautical, they still continue at the headquarters of the Yacht Club Adriaco by the CNR ISMAR of Trieste
The site is part of the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) network and is the only Italian station included in the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS)
